are 404 errors bad for SEO

When browsing the web, the most common HTTP error that people often face is the 404 error. Any internet user who has been using the web for at least a year may have encountered this type of error.

Many of the experts have mentioned that 404 errors can hurt your SEO and ruin your ranking. However, this is not valid as 404 errors are believed to be helpful and are quite normal.

If you take it theoretically, then 404 errors may hurt your ranking but not on the entire site; if a page returns a code error of 404, that means that the page does not exist at all. This is why Google or any other search engine is not able to index it.

The pages need to exist if you are looking for a good SEO ranking. Error 404 is created due to broken links, which means that if there were no broken links, there would be no 404 error.

If you want to experience the 404 error yourself, it is advised to add a slash after the domain by entering something random and then hitting the enter button. On the other hand, Google has always believed that 404s are normal.

What is 404 Error?

404 errors are a very normal part of the web. Profound changes are happening on the web wherein new content is born, and the old content dies.

The 404 errors occur when the old content dies. Search engines are aware of these scenarios as 404 errors are very common irrespective of the site's popularity.

Therefore, if some URLs on a site face 404 errors, it does not hurt the SEO on the Google search engine.

Besides, there are some other reasons for the same. It is essential to check why there are 404 errors when crawling.

This can be due to the misspelling of the URL. This means that if someone tries to link it to a website but has made a spelling mistake in the URL. In such cases, it is advised to 301 redirect the misspelled URL to the correct URL and then capture the intended traffic from the link. It is advised to help the users who land up with a 404 error on your site by allowing them to find what they were looking for instead of showing a 404 error.

Many believe that 404 errors are a fancy way of saying that the page was not found. Unfortunately, error pages can result to be very disturbing at times and the impact on SEOs depends on several factors that we shall learn below.

There are several reasons for the occurrence of 404 errors that are mentioned below.

Internal Links that are broken:

When a page does not exist anymore, or the page is being linked incorrectly then it can result in internal links that are broken. The broken links can create a huge nuisance as they interfere with Google's ability on particular sites by crawling and getting access to it.

There are several ways you can find the links that are broken. One smart way to find broken internal links is by using a web crawler regularly for the best results.

Soft 404 Pages:

Soft 404s can be troublesome, as when users find those pages, the search engine will continue to show the pages that have no existence. This results in a loss of time and a bad experience for users.

You can also perform a crawl using the screaming frog. This can be done by filtering the pages showing a 200-status code for the best results.

Does 404 affect SEO?

You are surfing through a website, and you click a link. On clicking the link, you get redirected and it says the page that you were searching for is not found.

This experience can be annoying for users. If you are the site owner, you must look into the matter for the best results.

Error 404 is a widespread problem that is seen on the internet.

Regarding the effects 404 errors have on SEO, there is a mixed opinion. Many people believe that receiving too many 404 errors can drop the ranking of a website affecting SEO and can levy a penalty too.

The truth here is there are no such penalties for having too many 404 errors on your website. There are few chances that the 404 errors can affect the SEO ranking.

This occurs if a critical landing page has been deleted. There are also chances in such circumstances that the landing page is using a new URL that it has been moved to and was not redirected.

If a page that you own has 404 errors, is able to get good traffic, and has backlinks, then it is advised to go for 301 redirects for the best results. Mentioned below are a few reasons why 404 errors in your website can be caused.

  • Suppose an internal link is linking to a page, which does not exist anymore on a website. It is advised to find the non-existence of the page for the best results.

    If you find the page not valid anymore, it is advised to remove it. 301 redirect can opt if the page that got deleted is moved to another page.

  • Suppose there is a typing mistake in the URL. In this case, you can opt for a fix by editing the link using the right spelling.
  • Sometimes it has been also seen that there is an issue with the sitemap that forces the specified link to some pages, which do not exist at all. If there is manual control, the page can be deleted from the sitemap and then resubmit the sitemap to the Google search for the best results.

The above points state that 404 errors do not have a drastic effect on the website. However, it is advised to do a proper investigation to determine why these errors are occurring and look for the best solution.

SEO Keyword Research

Hello again, my name is Lukasz Zelezny and today I wanted to show you how to do better research, in terms of keywords.

Obviously, if we’re talking about keywords we are going to be thinking about Google Search Console. The example that I have today is one that I chose completely at random – the website

It’s a big plumbing company based in Pimlico, as you can see – the domain name is Pimlico Plumbers, established in 1979. I checked and the domain name was registered in 2002, so that means it’s a pretty long time and there should be lots of interesting data that we can try to use, for me to share with you as an example.

I have 3 varieties of software here; the first is Semrush, the second is Searchmetrics and the third is Sistrix – three very powerful tools that I use simultaneously, especially for keyword research.

Let’s imagine hypothetically that the owner of Pimlico Plumbers is coming to me and saying, ‘Hey, Lukas, can you give me some advice on how to leverage my organic traffic and increase your organic visibility?’

The first step I would take would be to pull as many keywords as possible. If I don’t have access to Google Search Console, I can easily go to Semrush, Searchmetrics and Sistrix.

Right now, we can see that Sistrix in is showing 1,745 keywords in the top 100. Searchmetrics is showing 1,829 and Semrush is showing 3,608.

So, let’s see the full report on these keywords here with Semrush… you can also see nice growth, natural growth probably – I don’t know if this is natural or not but I can presume that there are people who are proactively working on the performance of this website. You can see here all the keywords, URLs and lots of other data.

We’re going to export them to Excel. Meanwhile, I’m going to Searchmetrics and doing something similar – long tail keywords – I’m going to export them straight away, using the export function.

You can see that this is a bit different, but at some points similar. Searchmetrics is asking me how many keywords I would like to export, I’ll export all of them with a click and the export will be ready soon.

Meanwhile I’m going to do the same with Sistrix, and like I said, Sistrix is showing 1,745 keywords. We can use the download function and we would still have 50,000 credits available.

(The concept of credit for downloads works pretty similarly with Sistrix and Searchmetrics).

Okay! Right now, Searchmetrics is reporting that it is ready, so I’m exporting the keywords from here and from Sistrix.

Now we need to open each report and name them Tracker 1 and Tracker 2 – the third one, which is here, we will call Tracker 3.

Something here is not quite right, so let’s do text to columns. Okay, we have pretty much what we need; URL, competition, traffic, cost per click… in this export we don’t have search volume, but it’s alright, it’s not a big deal.

To Tracker 3 we will add Tracker 2, just to show you that each software is collecting data in a different way, and here is Tracker 1. We need to try to make these 3 spreadsheets as similar to each other as possible, so we need Keyword: in all three, Keyword is in column A, so that’s fine.

Position, okay, then URL.

‘Previous Position’ we are not interested in, we need Search Volume and that’s pretty much it. I’m just removing everything else that’s here.

So! We have KEYWORD : POSITION : URL : SEARCH VOLUME and the flag which tells us which tracker (software) it was.

On this we need to swap the columns, put POSITION here and SEARCH VOLUME here, the rest we can remove.

This is the third one… on this one I can’t find Search Volume, so we will put N/A and the rest we can remove.

Now you have these in the right format, you can create another spreadsheet where you will add all of the keywords. That’s pretty much it.

The problem we have here is with the URL – the URL from the first tracker (software) is a bit different to Tracker 2 and 3. You can see that there’s HTTP in Tracker 2 and 3, and – actually there’s no HTTP in Tracker 2 so we would need to add this.

We can see that in two of the cases, Tracker 1 and Tracker 3 is using HTTP so we’ll use a quick trick to replace WWW with HTTP//WWW.

The first one we are replacing is creating a duplicate HTTP but that’s not a problem, we will switch this back too. If there are 2 lots of HTTP then it should be replaced with a single HTTP.

So that’s done and you can see that the URLs are now consistent.

Now, the most important part is to remember that there are 7,183 keywords that we have been able to pull using these 3 types of software. WE can presume there will be a lot of duplication so we need to remove those.

There are two ways to do this – I will try with this filter… yes, that’s done, so now we can copy this to one fresh spreadsheet and this is it. We have 5573 keywords here, and now, some simple maths: we had one software, Semrush, which was reporting round 3500 keywords, Searchmetrics was reporting 1800, Sistrix something like 1700 – altogether that was 7183, but when we removed the duplication there are 5573.

Technically, only around 2000 keywords in this exports have been duplicated across different software, and that way you can clearly see that using 3 different types of software for the same task gives you an amazing view of all of the keywords that are ranking in your website.

The last thing for this part; I can do a simple pivot, insert the pivot and think about this: I can put URLs here and I can put Keywords here and also here, then add Search Volume here. We will collapse this pivot and, if we sort, for example from the highest.

Now it works and we can see that Pimlico Plumbers is a URL that has the highest number of keywords. Some others are About Us, Recruitment, Pimlico Apprentice….then below, Service, Electrics and so on…

On the other side you can see the column with the Search Volume which you can also sort, and you can see that obviously that Number Plates is one of the most popular keywords…probably because some of the keywords that we have here in the pivot….yes, Number Plate is there, very very popular.

Hi. Welcome again, it’s Lukasz Zelezny with you and I want to continue with what we’ve done with our keywords in the previous part.

So now we have a pivot here and each URL were sorted by traffic index or, rather traffic index difference than traffic index, well this is the potential, how much we can draft. We have an average position of each URL, this average is taken from all keywords that are ranking, summarized search volume and finally the number of keywords that, the total number of keywords that trigger a specific URL.

That data had been taken from a tool called SEMRush but you can also do the same with other tools like Searchmetrics or Sistrix. So right now I would like to choose the URL that I would try to optimize.

So let’s say here is a URL which I would try to make more visible. It’s /seo-audit/.

Let’s open this and take a look. We have here, one, two, three, four, five keywords which relatively are like key phrases.

So what I can do right now is I can copy this and I can paste it on a new sheet. Well now I’m doing a little tweaks, so I’m going to text the columns and right now I want to have every word from these key words that I’ve selected to be in specific columns.

So once again I would make this a little bigger, and take a look, text to columns and I want to make sure that every time there is a space that means that the word should jump into different column. So by one click, this is what I finally get and now, I’m copying and pasting these things into one column.

So this is what I call the ATOM approach or the ATOM method. The name is not that important but, yeah.

So we have the key words and we split it, these keywords and key phrases into specific atoms and now we’re going to see which ATOM is the most popular.

So we’re doing another pivot and please, take a look, and again I would, okay. So, the most popular is obviously audit and SEO because the page is about SEO audit.

Let’s go back to our default pivot that we started from. So I had a URL which is called seo-audit, and if I open this, you would quickly see that it is purely about SEO audit, seo audit in seconds, pretty unbelievable, and so on and so on, and here is a little widget I have from SEMRush which helps me to generate some business leads for example.

And here below there is lots of content that can be useful if you are performing a SEO audit for yourself.

So, you see that ‘audit’ word exists one, two three, four, five times does audit word repeat, over and over. Google is only one time, SEO is here, and here, and here so three times.

And when I copied this into new sheet and then I built a list of all the words that are contained inside these key phrases, this is what I end up with finally, with these keywords.

And now I can build some phrase that makes sense and that contains these ATOMS. For example, “SEO Audit Tool”.

So that will cover these three, then we have website and WordPress, for your WordPress based website, and I will also do bold here.

So we know that we use these keywords. Now Google is a brand name and also is a trademark so it’s quite risky.

I wouldn’t recommend to use this inside your page as long as you don’t need. Then we have report and site so we can try to build some other phrase, Get an SEO Audit report about your site.

So in that phrase we have the word ‘report’ and the word ‘site’.

So you can see that I build two phrases, and these two phrases are pretty much covering all these words. Now I’m going to copy these two phrases and I’m going back to my page.

Um, and I can, for example, go to ‘edit’, and right now I will try to add these two phrases somewhere in the text so they will make some sense and they will help us to run better. So I, for example would like to start from here, one second, I need to remove these tables, so I would copy rather like that.

So we have this, and let’s say that will be our H3 tag, and then we’re going into this one, and we will copy that line, and we will put this line somewhere like, maybe like, maybe like this one. Preview, okay we have this, we can see that these two lines are here, the first one and the second one, and – update.

So we performed audit for that kind of, let’s call it cluster, so URL and corresponding keywords. So now we can close this.

And now I can go to social media webinar, and we have another webinar; there are some keywords that are related to the company I was working before, Fleetway Travel so they were the ones using this, but we have here webinar social media. So one key word, obviously, so we can go, and we can open this URL first.

So this URL looks like that, it’s a specific, it’s a special plugin that is generating ongoing webinars, and I can go here, and I can say, okay webinar social media, take it and let’s add this to webinar ignition. And we can go to registration page, we can go to sales copy and we can again try to add this somewhere ‘join our free social media webinar’ and our key word is webinar social media.

Now webinar social media is not that grammar-friendly, um, we suggest ‘this course for everyone especially’ so we can change the word ‘course’ to ‘this social media webinar’, um, ‘we suggest this social media webinar for everyone and especially’ and there are some other things. And we can save this, and then we can go back, we can clean the cache and we can go back to the webinar page, and refresh.

Again I can use green colour, and I can collapse this, so we in this short video we just optimize two pages with existing, let me, the internet is not quite fast so let me try to speed this up.

First of all, I am going to a tool called Semrush and I am going to see where my website is already ranked. There are 218 keywords – you can see that the performance is quite stable right now (and over the last 3 months)., my name is Lukasz Zelezny and I just wanted to share with you how to perform a simple snapshot analysis. That analysis we will perform on my website, – it’s a small website, but for this example I think it’s perfect.

That’s great, but I should probably consider doing something to rank a little bit better.

If I open the full report of, the most important thing here is to see all the keywords that enabled Semrush to find my website. I can very quickly and smoothly export it into an Excel format, and then load Excel…

We’ll remove some columns that we don’t care about at the moment – obviously sometimes they are useful but for this example we will just keep the columns for position, search volume and URL. I’m removing everything that we don’t need for this example and making the others a little bigger.

So, we have 218 keywords, we have a position and a search volume (taken from and the URL, because every time we talk about keywords we need to remember that they have to be present.

Here, I will create TI Max and TI difference. TI stands for Traffic Index and I will explain this to you a little later.

Now the most important part of this exercise is to create an additional supportive table, which should contain word position and click-through rate. As we know, the traffic coming from Google is potentially only occurring when you are listed on the first page of the results – probably between position 1 and 10.

I understand that there are other factors that can result in the first page only having 8 positions – Google Maps, News Results etc., but we are trying to simplify this.

There are lots of studies on organic click-through rate models, and that distribution is also different for each and every keyword. If we want to simplify it for this exercise we are going to avoid making any conclusions on this – please forgive me for this simplification, we are using these values just to make this example easy to understand.

So, we have position 1-10 and the click-through rate on each position. If you do a simple chart you will see that when you’re in position 1, the click-through rate is very high, also in position 2, but it doesn’t matter very much where you end up for every subsequent position.

So, this area is the area that we really want to fight for. Now that we know this, we will do a calculation for the Traffic Index.

(The TI is not our visits, although it’s correlated to them).

First, we need to find the click-through rate for each position. So, if the position is 2, the click-through rate is 12.

If we were to change the position to 4, the rate is 6%. If we convert it into percentages, we can see how it’s automatically picked up.

If we put in position 11, it will generate an error, because obviously in this table we don’t have click-through rate for position 11 – however, we can simply say that if there’s an error, if the position is higher than 10, put zero.

Finally, we need to take the search volume and multiply it by the specific click-through rate that depends on the position. If we change it into a normal number, we have the Traffic Index.

So, we have a Traffic Index for each keyword now, and then in the second column we have TI Max (Traffic Index Maximum) which denotes the Traffic Index we could potentially have if the keyword was in position 1. We understand that there are keywords that will simply never be in positon 1, but we need to simplify it for this exercise – we are taking search volume and multiplying it back the click-through rate which is in position 1.

Finally, TI Diff is the difference between TI Max, minus the current TI, so it will always be positive… the lowest volume it can be is zero. Imagine that conference speaker is in position 1, then the TI Max is 21, TI Diff is 0.

That’s the strong signal to us to understand that there is nothing we can do right now to make this keyword perform any better except, obviously, for playing a little bit with the meta-description which would give us a better click-through rate. That is not the main focus in this exercise however – we are only talking about position.

The next step is to perform a quick pivot, according to the URLs. We can see all the URLs and what we want here is to make sure it is definitely TI Diff, so we can see straight away that the biggest potential is found on the home page.

There’s been a little error in the export because we can see that we don’t have this here, so we probably need to merge this.

Let’s do that, then. If we get back to this page, I will do a trick – let me replace every occurrence of HTTP with HTTPS.

Okay, no matches. Let me try like…that…

Okay! 8 instances and right now we have this done correctly.

Let me now try to do this pivot once again.

We are doing ‘pivot’ and we are doing ‘URL’ and we are doing ‘TI Diff’. On the next level, we are adding ‘keyword’ and we are adding ‘position’.

It’s important to make sure that here it is not SUM, it’s the Average.

This is pretty much it…. Maybe to make it even more sexy I will add ‘Search Volume’.

That’s all we need! What do we learn from this?

We know that if we sort this by TI, the home page has the biggest potential based on the keywords that are already ranking, and we know the average position of this URL based on all the keywords, is position 58. I also will add the count of the keywords here, so we know that there are 42 keywords that are ranking which trigger the URL that we have here.

If we click plus, we can see what the keywords are. The first two are fleetway travel, that’s the company I was working for back in the day.

We can sort this by positions from smallest to largest and we can see that website’s status checker, SEO conference speaker, social media speaker and so on… these keywords are ranking somewhere in the top 100. Right now, I can take the keywords like SEO conference speaker and start optimizing the website.

Let’s go here, the HTTP status checker. I can show you what this webpage looks like – it’s very simple, we can put in any address, click check and they will check what the status is.

There’s obviously a long article which ensures this website rates well, and many terms related to checking statuses.

Lots of these keywords here will be related to checking HTTP statuses. Then we have another one which is blog topic content title generator – this is another tool that I have – you can go here, open it, write ‘SEO get ideas’ and you can find ideas for the title of your new blog.

Again, here are the keywords related to this page which are very different to the keywords related to HTTP status checker. We have ‘klout score’ which is a tutorial that I wrote, then the ‘conference speaker’ page which is purely about my conferences.

Then, ‘social media webinar’ which is quite important, it’s an ongoing webinar that you can join any time you want. I can see that there is some potential, like ‘webinar social media’, ‘free social media’, and again some irrelevant keywords here that I won’t consider adding.

Another one is the SEO audit – I’m using a widget from Semrush so I can go here and I can simply try to optimize the content which is here. The tool is here, you can enter your domain and email and that will send you a free audit.

You can see here that the ‘free SEO audit’ search volume is 110 which is small, but the keyword volume is highly related to the industry, then ‘Google site audit’, ‘SEO audit expert tool’, ‘website audit tool’ ‘wordpress SEO audit’ – they are keywords that I would probably need to add to this page and we will be talking about this later.
